§ · best shopify apps dtc

Best Shopify apps for DTC. 14 picks for 2026.

Hand-picked across six categories — email, reviews, subscriptions, attribution, post-purchase, support. Real monthly fees, real revenue thresholds for adoption, real warnings about each.

§ 01 · methodology

14 apps. Picked for fit, not for affiliate revenue.

We have built and maintained Shopify stores since 2017 across $50K to $20M in annual revenue. These 14 picks are the apps we install on real client work. We do not take affiliate revenue from any of them and we have flagged every one with a revenue floor (when it pays back), a revenue ceiling (when you outgrow it), and the cheaper alternative if it exists. Apps that look fine on the App Store but fail in production are excluded — see the "what we excluded" note at the bottom of each category.

How we evaluated

  • Real install on at least 3 client stores in 2024-2026
  • Honest fee disclosure including platform fees + per-action costs
  • Revenue threshold where the app pays back (most have one)
  • Documented integration with Shopify Plus, Online Store 2.0, checkout extensions where relevant
  • At least one credible alternative listed when one exists
  • We excluded ourselves — Digital Heroes does not build a Shopify app, so this is not a self-promotion list
§ 02 · email + sms

Email + SMS. The owned-channel layer.

pick 01

Klaviyo

Email + SMS · from $20/mo · klaviyo.com

The DTC default. Native Shopify integration, deepest segmentation, strong flow library. Fees scale with email list size — costs $300/mo at 10K subs, $2K/mo at 100K subs.

Adopt at: $250K ARR. Warning: Feb 2025 billing change made profile cleanup mandatory; brands with stale lists got 40% bill bumps. Run a profile-cleanup pass quarterly. See our Klaviyo integration guide.

pick 02

Postscript

SMS · from $100/mo + per-message · postscript.io

Best-in-class SMS for brands with established email. Conversational flows, segmentation parity with Klaviyo, transparent per-message pricing.

Adopt at: $1M+ ARR (SMS works after email is mature). Warning: SMS has 2-3% the deliverability tolerance of email; over-send and you lose carrier rep. Build a segmentation strategy before turning on broadcasts.

§ 03 · reviews + ugc

Reviews. The single highest-conversion install.

pick 03

Judge.me

Reviews · free / $15/mo · judge.me

The default under $500K revenue. Free tier covers everything most stores need; $15/mo paid tier adds in-email review collection.

Pick when: early-stage, budget-constrained.

pick 04

Loox

Reviews · from $10/mo · loox.com

Photo + video reviews. Best for visually-driven categories — beauty, fashion, home goods. UGC carousel widget converts at 2-3x text-only review widgets.

Pick when: visual product, $250K+ ARR.

pick 05

Yotpo

Reviews + loyalty · from $15/mo · yotpo.com

Reviews + loyalty + SMS in one suite. Strong for established brands; gets expensive at scale ($1K+/mo).

Pick when: $2M+ ARR, want one vendor for reviews + loyalty + SMS.

See our deeper comparison: Yotpo vs Loox vs Judge.me.

§ 04 · subscriptions

Subscriptions. For consumable + replenishment categories.

pick 06

Recharge

Subscriptions · from $99/mo + 1.25% · rechargepayments.com

Market default at $1M+ subscription revenue. Deepest customer portal, most mature dunning, broadest integration ecosystem (Klaviyo, Gorgias, Postscript).

Adopt at: $200K subscription MRR. Warning: $99/mo + 1.25% transaction fee compounds — at $1M MRR you pay $13.5K/mo in Recharge fees alone.

pick 07

Skio

Subscriptions · from $499/mo · skio.com

Modern challenger with cleaner customer portal UX, faster checkout, tighter passwordless authentication. Migration tooling out of Recharge is mature.

Adopt at: brand-led $500K+ subscription MRR. Warning: ecosystem is still smaller than Recharge — verify your loyalty / Klaviyo / SMS integrations work first.

See our setup guide: Recharge setup + churn-flow architecture.

§ 05 · attribution

Attribution. Post iOS 14.5 reality.

pick 08

Northbeam

Attribution · from $1K/mo · northbeam.io

Sophisticated MMM (media-mix modeling) + multi-touch attribution. Best for brands spending $200K+/mo on paid where the channel mix matters more than per-campaign ROAS.

Adopt at: $200K/mo paid spend. Warning: setup takes 6-10 weeks; setup quality determines attribution quality.

pick 09

Triple Whale

Attribution + dashboards · from $129/mo · triplewhale.com

Faster onboarding, daily-dashboard focus, lighter MMM. Best for brands with $50K-$500K/mo paid spend who want a single pane of glass for daily attribution review.

Adopt at: $50K/mo paid spend. Warning: attribution model is more rules-based than Northbeam — interpret with judgment.

See our comparison: Northbeam vs Triple Whale.

§ 06 · post-purchase + support

Post-purchase + support. The forgotten layers.

pick 10

ReConvert

Post-purchase upsell · from $5/mo · reconvert.io

Thank-you-page upsells + post-purchase offers. Frequently 3-7% AOV lift on stores with cross-sell potential.

pick 11

Shop Quiz (by Shopify)

Product quizzes · from $39/mo · apps.shopify.com

Recommendation quizzes for beauty, supplements, vitamins, and configurable categories. Strong email list growth bonus.

pick 12

Gorgias

Helpdesk · from $50/mo · gorgias.com

Shopify-native helpdesk with order context in every ticket. Standard pick at $1M+ ARR. Real TCO at scale: $500-$1,500/mo.

pick 13

Re:amaze

Helpdesk · from $29/user/mo · reamaze.com

60-80% cheaper than Gorgias for similar core features. Pick when budget matters more than the polish gap.

pick 14

Tidio

Live chat + AI · free / $19/mo · tidio.com

Live chat + simple AI support agent. Pick at <$500K revenue when full-helpdesk feels overkill.

See our Gorgias setup guide: Gorgias customer-support setup.

§ 07 · what we excluded

What we left out. And why.

Page builders (Shogun, GemPages, PageFly).

They lock you into a closed templating layer. Online Store 2.0 sections do most of what they do natively. Removing them is a multi-week migration that we recommend on every audit.

Bundled "all-in-one" suites at MVP stage.

Buying email + reviews + loyalty + SMS bundled from one vendor under $500K revenue is overkill. The modular best-of-breed stack costs less and scales better.

Apps with no transparent pricing.

If the App Store listing requires a sales call to learn the price, the price is high enough that they hide it. We default-skip these on small-store recommendations.

§ 08 · questions

Five honest answers.

Which Shopify apps are essential for a new DTC brand?

Three apps cover 90% of what a sub-$500K DTC brand needs: Klaviyo for email (the welcome flow + abandoned cart pays back month one), Judge.me for reviews (free tier is enough; reviews convert at 2-4x for products without them), and one customer-support tool (Tidio free or Re:amaze cheap). Add Postscript SMS at $1M ARR. Add Recharge if you sell subscriptions. Avoid the temptation to install 15 apps; each app you install adds 30-100ms to page load and a per-month bill.

How much do Shopify apps typically cost per month?

Typical app stack costs $200-$600/mo at $250K-$1M ARR (Klaviyo $50-200, reviews $10-50, support $50-150, attribution $129+). At $5M+ ARR the stack runs $2K-$5K/mo (Klaviyo $1K+, Recharge $500+, Northbeam $1K+, Gorgias $300-500, plus Yotpo loyalty or similar). Expect app costs to scale roughly with revenue at 0.5-1.5% of net revenue. Budget for it from day one.

Do Shopify apps slow down my store?

Yes. Each app adds 30-100ms to page load on average; a stack of 15 apps can add 1-2 seconds. The biggest culprits are review widgets (Yotpo's full widget ~200KB), photo galleries, popups, and chat widgets. LCP degrades fastest. Audit your app stack quarterly: uninstall apps not actively driving revenue. See our Shopify speed optimization service for a deeper audit.

Should I use Shopify Email or Klaviyo?

Shopify Email is fine under $50K revenue (free for 10K emails/month). Move to Klaviyo as soon as you cross 1,000 email subscribers OR when you need flow segmentation beyond "abandoned cart." Klaviyo's segmentation, A/B testing, and revenue attribution are 5-10x deeper than Shopify Email. The migration is straightforward.

Are page builder apps (PageFly, Shogun) worth it?

Rarely. Online Store 2.0 sections do 90% of what page builders do natively, and theme sections are owned by you (page builder content is locked into the app). Page builders make sense for marketing teams without developer access who need to ship landing pages weekly. For most brands, investing in custom Shopify theme customization sections is cheaper long-term and faster on the production page.
