§ · best shopify subscription apps

Best Shopify subscription apps. Six apps, one decision.

Compared head-to-head across fees, customer-portal UX, churn-flow control, and category fit. Six picks, real revenue thresholds, and the migration math when you outgrow your first choice.

§ 01 · methodology

Six apps. One subscription decision.

Subscription is the single highest-impact business-model decision in DTC. The right subscription app determines churn (typically 4-15% monthly), customer portal UX (the #1 driver of churn-flow saves), and your engineering surface for future product changes. We have built and maintained subscription stacks across $50K to $5M MRR. The six apps below are the ones we install on real client work; we have flagged each with the revenue threshold where it pays back, the migration cost when you outgrow it, and the category fit (consumables, beauty, food, supplements, pet, apparel-replenishment).

How we evaluated

  • Real install on at least 2 client subscription stores in 2024-2026
  • Honest fee disclosure including platform fee + per-transaction percentage
  • Customer portal UX (passwordless / SMS-auth / one-click swap) tested
  • Churn-flow architecture support (skip / swap / pause / discount / cancel hierarchy)
  • Migration tooling out of Recharge (the most common starting point)
  • We excluded ourselves — Digital Heroes does not build a subscription app, so this is not a self-promotion list

§ 03 · the two market leaders

Recharge vs Skio. The decision most brands face.

pick 01

Recharge

From $99/mo + 1.25% · rechargepayments.com

The market default. Deepest ecosystem of integrations (Klaviyo, Postscript, Gorgias, Northbeam), broadest reporting, most mature dunning. Used by majority of $1M+ subscription brands on Shopify.

Strengths: ecosystem depth, dunning maturity, customer portal feature breadth, integration with every major Shopify app.

Weaknesses: highest fees in category ($99 + 1.25% means $13.5K/mo at $1M MRR, $54K/mo at $4M MRR). Customer portal UX feels dated vs Skio. See our Recharge setup guide.

pick 02

Skio

From $499/mo + 1% · skio.com

Modern challenger. Passwordless SMS-auth customer portal, faster swap UX, tighter Shopify checkout integration. Migration tooling out of Recharge is mature.

Strengths: cleaner customer portal UX (drives 1-3% lower churn in our installs), passwordless auth, modern API, supportive integrations team.

Weaknesses: ecosystem is still smaller than Recharge — verify your loyalty + Klaviyo + SMS integrations work first. $499/mo flat is higher than Recharge entry tier.

Decision rule: stay on Recharge if your ecosystem has 5+ integrations and switching costs > 12 months of fee delta; migrate to Skio if your portal UX is a churn driver and your integration footprint is light.

§ 04 · mid-market alternatives

Bold + Loop + Awtomic. Three different angles.

pick 03

Bold Subscriptions

$49-$249/mo · boldcommerce.com

Mid-market subscription tied to Bold's broader app suite (upsell, bundles, pricing). Best for brands already running other Bold apps.

Pick when: already running Bold Upsell or Bold Bundles.

pick 04

Loop Subscriptions

$0-$240/mo · loopwork.co

Built for AOV lift via subscription add-ons + bundle upsells. Strong customer-portal cancel-flow control.

Pick when: add-on / bundle revenue is the strategy.

pick 05

Awtomic

$29-$249/mo · awtomic.com

Build-a-box + bundle-first subscription. Strong fit for snack boxes, vitamin stacks, configurable subscription products.

Pick when: build-a-box is the core product.

§ 05 · cheapest entry

Seal Subscriptions. For MVPs and budget-constrained launches.

pick 06

Seal Subscriptions

Free up to 30 orders/mo · $4.99-$74.99/mo paid · sealsubscriptions.com

Cheapest entry point in the category. Free up to 30 subscription orders/month, then $4.99-$74.99/mo paid tiers. No per-transaction fee. Migration to Recharge or Skio is straightforward when you outgrow it.

Pick when: validating subscription as a model, sub-$15K subscription MRR, want to avoid commitment to a $99-$499/mo platform fee.

§ 06 · migration math

When to migrate. And when to stay.

Migration cost between subscription apps runs $8K-$30K depending on the source/destination pair, customer count, and integration footprint. The math:

Stay if:

Migration cost > 12 months of fee savings, OR your ecosystem has 5+ integrations that work today, OR you have an active churn-reduction project with the current platform.

Migrate if:

Customer-portal UX is a documented churn driver, OR your product roadmap requires API depth your current app does not provide, OR fees consume more than 1.5% of subscription revenue.

Common migration paths:

Seal → Recharge (at $20K MRR), Recharge → Skio (UX-driven), Bold → Recharge (ecosystem-driven). Avoid migrating "because the new one is shinier" — every migration loses 2-5% of subscribers in the cutover.

§ 07 · questions

Six honest answers.

Which Shopify subscription app is the most popular?

Recharge is the market leader by a wide margin — installed on the majority of $1M+ subscription brands on Shopify. The number-two slot is contested between Skio (modern challenger), Bold Subscriptions (mid-market), and Loop Subscriptions (AOV-focused). Most shops do not switch because the migration cost is real (typically $10K-$25K) and the dunning + churn-flow setup re-work compounds the cost.

How much does Recharge cost?

Recharge Standard is $99/mo + 1.25% per subscription transaction + $0.19 per order. Pro tier is $499/mo + 1% + $0.19 per order. At $100K subscription MRR, Standard runs ~$1,350/mo total. At $1M MRR, Standard runs ~$13,500/mo. At $4M MRR, Pro tier becomes cheaper. The fees are the highest in the category but the ecosystem maturity often justifies them at scale.

Is Skio better than Recharge?

Skio has better customer-portal UX (passwordless SMS auth, faster product-swap flow) and a cleaner modern API. Recharge has a deeper integration ecosystem (Klaviyo, Postscript, Gorgias, Northbeam, Yotpo, every loyalty app). Skio is "better" for brands where portal UX is the churn driver and the integration footprint is light. Recharge is "better" for brands with 5+ integrations and existing dunning + churn-flow maturity. The honest answer is "it depends on your stack and your churn pattern."

What's the cheapest Shopify subscription app?

Seal Subscriptions is the cheapest viable entry point — free up to 30 subscription orders per month, then $4.99-$74.99/mo paid tiers with no per-transaction fee. The right pick when validating subscription as a business model. Migrate to Recharge or Skio when you cross ~$15-20K subscription MRR; the deeper ecosystem starts paying back at that scale.

Does Shopify have native subscriptions?

Shopify launched native subscription functionality (Shopify Subscriptions) in 2022 and continues to expand it. The native app is free and acceptable for very simple subscription models — single product, monthly cadence, basic customer portal. It lacks the depth of dedicated apps: no skip / swap / pause hierarchy, no advanced dunning, no churn-flow customization, limited integration with email + SMS apps. Real subscription brands almost always use a dedicated app within 6-12 months of launch.

How long does subscription app migration take?

A typical Recharge to Skio migration takes 4-8 weeks: 2 weeks for data audit + customer-comm planning, 2-3 weeks for migration tooling and customer portal rebuild, 1-2 weeks for cutover + monitoring. Larger or more complex migrations (10K+ subscribers, multi-product, complex add-on stacks) run 8-12 weeks. Budget $10K-$25K in agency cost and expect a 2-5% subscriber loss during cutover (some are passive churn that triggers when emails go out about portal changes). See our Shopify migration service.
