Squarespace to Shopify, content preserved.
Content-first sites deserve commerce-first engines. Migrate your Squarespace store to Shopify without losing the design discipline, the blog SEO, or the reader audience you built.
Squarespace is editorial. Shopify is commerce.
Squarespace was built for content-first sites and added commerce. Shopify was built for commerce-first stores and added content. Both can run an ecommerce site, but their centres of gravity pull different directions. When your revenue tilts commerce-first, Shopify stops being an option and starts being the answer. The table below is the side-by-side: what you gain, what you carry across, what you rebuild.
| Surface | Squarespace | Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Editorial layout | Deep (Fluid Engine 7.1) | Solid via Sections + Blocks |
| Typography control | Deep | Solid via theme tokens |
| Blog platform | Deep | Functional with BlogPosting JSON-LD |
| Ecommerce app ecosystem | Limited | ~8,000 apps |
| Inventory management | Basic single-location | Multi-location native |
| Shipping rules | Basic zones + weight | Full zones + rates + Carrier API |
| Tax | Basic US | Shopify Tax + Avalara |
| Subscriptions | Limited | ReCharge or Shopify Subscriptions |
| Email + flows | Squarespace Email Campaigns | Klaviyo native integration |
| Checkout customization | Limited | Checkout UI Extensions + Functions on Plus |
| Server-side pixel / CAPI | Client-only | Meta CAPI native via Shopify |
| Partner network | Smaller | Shopify Partners (much larger) |
The decision hinges on mix. If your content is 80% of your brand identity and commerce is a secondary revenue stream, Squarespace plus a careful Buy Button integration may still fit. If commerce is 60% or more, Shopify pays back within 6 to 12 months on feature velocity alone.
Every data primitive. And your design discipline.
Products + variants
Squarespace products migrate to Shopify with full variant structure intact. Service products (bookings, appointments) become digital products plus a booking app.
Categories
Squarespace categories become Shopify Collections. Tags preserve as Shopify tags with metafield enrichment.
Customers + consent
Customer records with email, addresses, consent. Klaviyo inherits consent timestamp from Squarespace Email Campaigns.
Orders (read-only)
Historical orders import to Shopify for customer service reference.
Blog + pages
Full blog migrates with formatting, images, authors, categories. Static pages become Shopify Pages.
Content blocks. Product cards.
Both versions migrate the same way.
Squarespace 7.0 (classic) and Squarespace 7.1 have different design engines but the same export format. Both migrate cleanly to Shopify. The differences below are relevant to scoping, not to whether the migration is possible.
- Template-specific layouts (Brine, Bedford, York families)
- Older CSS architecture, per-template config
- Often heavier customization per merchant
- Migration cost: similar to 7.1
- Unified template model, Fluid Engine editor
- Modern CSS, cleaner structure
- Maps more directly to Shopify Sections + Blocks
- Migration cost: slightly lower than 7.0
Your design language, documented and carried.
For brands whose visual identity is load-bearing, the design-preservation tier exists. We document your Squarespace design system before we rebuild, then recreate each piece in Shopify Liquid with matching visual output. The documented system travels with your brand going forward.
- Typography stack: font families, weights, tracking, line heights across H1 through body, including italic accent patterns and serif pairings (often via Google Fonts).
- Spacing scale: margin and padding rhythm captured in tokens.
- Colour system: palette, contrast ratios per WCAG, semantic roles (background, surface, text, accent).
- Editorial grid: column behaviour, hero composition, gallery patterns, captions, pull quotes.
- Section patterns: every reusable layout in your Squarespace site inventoried and rebuilt as a Shopify Section.
- Figma handoff: we document the system in Figma so your design team owns the source.
- Accessibility: WCAG 2.2 AA contrast and semantic pass on every section.
Every URL. Every backlink.
| Squarespace pattern | Shopify target |
|---|---|
| /shop/{slug} | /products/{handle} |
| /shop?category={slug} | /collections/{handle} |
| /blog/{slug} | /blogs/news/{handle} |
| /blog/category/{slug} | /blogs/news/tagged/{slug} |
| /{page-slug} | /pages/{handle} |
| /sitemap.xml | /sitemap.xml (auto-generated) |
| /robots.txt | /robots.txt (Shopify-managed) |

$680K wellness brand. 9-week design-preserved cutover.
An archetype wellness + skincare brand with $680K annual revenue, a strong content audience, and a Squarespace 7.1 site whose editorial design was core to the brand. The ask: a platform that supports subscriptions, multi-location inventory, real email marketing, without abandoning the editorial tone of the current site.
What shipped: 240 SKUs on Shopify with ingredient metafields and structured content, 92 blog posts migrated with typography and layout preserved, Klaviyo replacing Squarespace Email Campaigns with 12,400 subscribers, ReCharge subscriptions covering the wellness product range, Judge.me replacing Squarespace's native reviews. SEO monitoring: organic traffic recovered at day 14, up 11% at day 60 from faster rendering.

Six questions Squarespace merchants ask.
Why migrate from Squarespace to Shopify?
Squarespace is content-first with commerce added on; Shopify is commerce-first with content support. That difference shows up as a ceiling around $100K to $500K per year in ecommerce revenue. The symptoms: limited app ecosystem (especially for subscriptions, loyalty, advanced shipping), basic inventory management, limited checkout customization, no server-side conversion API, and shipping rules that cannot express complex zone + rate + weight logic. For brands whose revenue is mostly commerce rather than content, Shopify is usually the right next platform.
How long does a Squarespace to Shopify migration take?
A standard Squarespace to Shopify migration takes 6 to 8 weeks. Migrations that preserve the full Squarespace design system in Shopify Liquid run 8 to 10 weeks. Squarespace migrations are similar in scope to Wix migrations: simpler data model than Magento or WooCommerce, smaller custom code surface, but more design work for brands whose current Squarespace site carries strong editorial identity they want to preserve.
Can we keep our Squarespace design on Shopify?
Yes, usually on a Dawn-derived theme with careful recreation of the design system. We document your Squarespace design language (typography stack, spacing scale, colour palette, editorial grid, section patterns) and rebuild each piece in Shopify Liquid with matching visual output. For brands whose visual identity is load-bearing (fashion, beauty, wellness, home, photography), this is the tier we recommend. For commerce-first brands, a standard Shopify theme with brand tokens applied is usually enough.
What happens to our Squarespace blog?
Blog posts migrate to Shopify's native blog with full post body, images, author, and published date preserved. Squarespace permalinks follow /blog/{slug} or /category/{slug}/{post-slug}; Shopify uses /blogs/news/{handle}. Every blog URL gets a 301 redirect before DNS flips, so your search rankings transfer. For content-heavy Squarespace sites with 100+ posts, we migrate category pages and tag pages in parallel with the post content, so internal linking and taxonomic SEO survives intact.
Will we lose SEO rankings during the migration?
Not if engineered properly. Every indexed Squarespace URL maps 301 to its Shopify equivalent before DNS flips. Canonical tags, meta descriptions, title tags, Product and BreadcrumbList JSON-LD, and XML sitemaps all migrate or rebuild on Shopify. Google Search Console change of address is filed immediately after cutover. Brands migrating from Squarespace often see a small organic lift post-migration because Shopify pages tend to render faster on mobile, and Shopify's native schema support is more complete than Squarespace's.
Should we keep Squarespace as a CMS and use Shopify Buy Button?
Possible, but usually not the right answer. Running Squarespace as the CMS plus Shopify as the cart via Buy Button splits your inventory management, order admin, customer accounts, and reporting across two platforms. It is cheaper initially but adds operational drag over time. For content-heavy brands where Squarespace's editorial features genuinely outperform Shopify's, a Hydrogen-plus-Sanity or Hydrogen-plus-Contentful architecture is usually a better long-term answer than Squarespace + Buy Button. The audit evaluates both paths and recommends based on your actual content-vs-commerce mix.
