Shopify vs Squarespace. Catalog vs canvas.

Squarespace wins for designer-led sites with a small shop. Shopify wins for catalog-first brands at any scale. A straight comparison by profile, without affiliate allegiance.

§ 01 · the short answer

Squarespace for designer-led. Shopify for catalog-led.

Squarespace was built as a design-forward website builder for creatives and service professionals; ecommerce was added in 2014 and has grown steadily but remains a secondary surface. Shopify was built for ecommerce from day one and everything — admin, apps, scale, international — is designed around that first job. The result: Squarespace produces a more polished site out of the box with less effort, but the ecosystem runs thin the moment your store needs a feature the platform does not natively provide. Pick based on whether "polished portfolio with a shop" or "ecommerce business with a website" describes the project.

§ 03 · questions

Five answers.

Is Squarespace's ecommerce good enough for a real store?

For small catalogs (under 100 SKUs) and predictable shipping, Squarespace ecommerce is adequate. You get products, variants, inventory, discounts, abandoned-cart recovery, and Stripe/Square checkout. Past 100 SKUs or past any requirement that needs an app (advanced subscriptions, loyalty programs, multi-warehouse inventory, B2B pricing tiers), the Squarespace ecosystem runs thin fast. Shopify's 8,000+ app store fills these gaps routinely; Squarespace does not.

Which has better design?

Squarespace templates are widely regarded as the most designed out of the box of any website builder; the platform's editorial heritage is real. Shopify themes from the Shopify Theme Store (especially paid themes like Impulse, Prestige, Maker) match the design quality but require more setup to hit it. For design-led service sites (photographers, architects, consultants) Squarespace's templates usually ship faster to a polished result. For ecommerce-led brands, the gap closes once a competent developer sets up a Shopify theme.

Which has better SEO?

Shopify wins for ecommerce SEO (product schema, canonical handling, sitemap generation, Core Web Vitals, international SEO). Squarespace is competitive on content SEO (blog system, typography defaults, clean URLs) but lags on ecommerce-specific schema and the depth of on-page control. For a brochure site with a small shop, Squarespace SEO is fine. For a catalog-led brand competing on product queries, Shopify is the safer choice.

What does each cost at scale?

Squarespace Commerce tiers run $23/mo (Business), $27/mo (Basic Commerce), $49/mo (Advanced Commerce). Shopify runs $29 (Basic), $79 (Grow), $299 (Advanced), $2,300+ (Plus). For a store doing under $50K/yr with a small catalog, Squarespace is cheaper. For a store doing $1M+/yr, the Shopify subscription becomes a rounding error on gross margin and the platform's operational leverage more than compensates. The app ecosystem also compounds costs differently; Squarespace is simpler in part because you cannot extend it much.

When do Squarespace stores migrate to Shopify?

Three typical triggers. One, SKU count or catalog complexity (variants, bundles, configurable products) outgrows Squarespace's surface. Two, a specific growth lever requires an app that does not exist in Squarespace's ecosystem (ReCharge for subscriptions, Klaviyo for email, Gorgias for support). Three, international or B2B expansion needs features (Markets, Plus company accounts) that Squarespace does not offer. Migration runs 8 to 12 weeks including redesign.
