§ 01 · the brand archetype

A B2B industrial brand operating from West Loop.

The archetype represents a slice of Chicago B2B industrial commerce we ship into reliably: a manufacturer or distributor of industrial supplies, fittings, fasteners, or specialty parts operating from West Loop, Fulton Market, or Lincoln Park, $120K MRR mostly through ad-hoc phone + fax + email orders, a small dealer network without a self-serve portal, and a 30-year-old NetSuite ERP that runs the business but does not talk to anyone outside accounting. Pre-engagement state: $120K MRR on a Magento 1.9 store running on a single dedicated server, no NET-30 catalog pricing, dealer onboarding via PDF + email, manual order entry into NetSuite generating an 8 percent order-error rate.

Three structural problems compounded the revenue ceiling. One, dealers ordered through a sales rep who manually keyed every line into NetSuite — a 30-line wholesale order took 45 minutes and produced 2-3 errors per 100 lines. Two, customer-specific catalog pricing (negotiated per-account NET-30 terms) lived in a spreadsheet rather than the storefront — every dealer saw retail prices and had to phone for a quote. Three, the Magento 1.9 platform was end-of-life with no security patches; one breach away from a board-level incident.

§ 02 · the approach

22 weeks. Five workstreams. One platform.

Workstream 1 · Magento to Shopify Plus B2B migration. Full SKU, customer, and order-history export from Magento 1.9 via Matrixify, custom-attribute mapping for the 12,000-SKU catalog, full URL inventory + 301 redirect map preserved for SEO. See our Magento to Shopify migration methodology.

Workstream 2 · Shopify Plus B2B catalog + company accounts. Built out the 84 dealer accounts as Shopify Plus company accounts, each with its own catalog pricing tier, NET-30 payment terms, role-based admins, and approval workflow. Catalog pricing tiers managed via Shopify Functions. Dealers self-serve onboarded via a custom signup workflow.

Workstream 3 · NetSuite ERP integration with EDI. Built bi-directional sync between Shopify Plus and NetSuite for inventory, customers, orders, and invoices via Celigo integration platform. EDI 850 (purchase order), 810 (invoice), and 856 (advance shipping notice) wired up with the top 5 distributors. Order-error rate dropped from 8 percent to 0.9 percent.

Workstream 4 · Quote flow re-design. Custom quote-request flow built into the storefront: dealers request a quote, sales reps get a notification with full context, 24-hour SLA on response, accepted quotes converted to draft orders inline. Quote-to-cart conversion moved from 24 percent to 47 percent.

Workstream 5 · Dealer-portal launch + onboarding playbook. 12-week dealer-by-dealer onboarding rollout with white-glove training, custom playbooks per dealer size, and proactive sales-rep coverage during the first month of self-serve. Dealer revenue uplift: +280 percent within 12 months.

§ 05 · what this means for chi b2b brands

If your Chicago B2B brand looks like this archetype.

The pattern this archetype represents (Chicago B2B industrial commerce in fittings, fasteners, specialty parts, or distribution, $100K-$300K MRR, sitting on Magento 1.9 or BigCommerce or a custom legacy platform with NetSuite or SAP ERP, dealer network without a self-serve portal, manual order entry creating error rate above 5 percent) is one of our most-shipped engagement shapes in Chicago. The 22-week timeline holds steady; the workstreams compress or expand in the same proportions; the metrics typically land within plus or minus 25 percent of the archetype numbers.
